HRV (Heart Rate Variability)

HRV, or heart rate variability, is the variation in time between consecutive heartbeats. A high HRV reflects a responsive, well-recovered nervous system. A low HRV signals accumulated stress, poor recovery, or autonomic imbalance.

HRV is controlled by the autonomic nervous system (ANS), specifically the balance between the sympathetic (fight-or-flight) and parasympathetic (rest-and-digest) branches. When the parasympathetic system is dominant, the intervals between heartbeats vary more, producing a high RMSSD value (the most common consumer metric). When the sympathetic system dominates — due to stress, illness, sleep deprivation, or overtraining — intervals become uniform and HRV drops.

For women, HRV fluctuates predictably across the menstrual cycle: it tends to be highest during the follicular phase (when estrogen is rising) and lowest in the late luteal phase (days before menstruation). Perimenopause can cause a sustained suppression of HRV baseline as estrogen declines. Normal RMSSD values for women range from approximately 45–70 ms in the 20s, declining gradually to 25–50 ms by the 50s, though individual variation is wide and personal baseline matters more than population norms.

HRV can be improved over months through consistent Zone 2 aerobic training, sleep optimization, stress management, and resonance breathing (5–6 breaths/minute). It is one of the most actionable longevity and recovery biomarkers available through consumer wearables.
