L. plantarum 299v

Lactobacillus plantarum 299v is a specific probiotic strain with evidence for reducing IBS symptoms, improving iron absorption, and supporting gut barrier integrity. It is one of the few probiotic strains with robust clinical data rather than generic marketing claims.

Most probiotic products are marketed based on total CFU counts and genus/species labeling, but the clinical effects of probiotics are highly strain-specific. L. plantarum 299v is one of the well-characterized strains — isolated from human mucosa, studied extensively in clinical trials, and produced commercially as GoodBelly and Ideal Bowel Support.

Clinical evidence supports several uses. For IBS, multiple randomized trials have shown significant reductions in bloating, abdominal pain, and irregular bowel habits with daily supplementation. For iron absorption, a notable trial showed that consuming L. plantarum 299v with meals increased non-heme iron absorption by approximately 50% — relevant for women with low ferritin, who often have inadequate dietary iron absorption rather than inadequate intake. For gut barrier integrity, the strain adheres to intestinal mucosa and produces compounds that strengthen tight junctions, potentially reducing intestinal permeability ("leaky gut").

The strain is also notable for its compatibility with the existing gut microbiome — it tends to colonize transiently rather than competing with resident species, and produces minimal side effects. It survives gastric transit well and delivers active bacteria to the intestines in standard oral formulations.

For women specifically, L. plantarum 299v is particularly useful in two contexts: during or after antibiotic use (restoring some gut ecology), and in cases of low ferritin with apparent dietary iron adequacy (where absorption is the bottleneck). Typical dosing is one capsule (10 billion CFU) daily, with a meal for the iron-absorption benefit.
